I can't quite agree: to ask her language to "match up" to Donne's is to
ask the impossible. The English of the Metaphysicals is not the same as
the language of a 21st century post-modern poet, and engaging in value
judgments between those two Englishes is not merely a matter of taste
but also detracts from her stated project, which is to recover those
Metaphysical sensibilities for herself, re-embody them and re-present
them to a readership in a world filled with Iraqs. Not a folly at all I
think but not unlike Pound's appropriation of Asian poetry.
