medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As John Briggs not has a York calendar to hand, will I supply the
information today where it is relevant:
The York calendar published by the Rev. Canon Wordsworth, M.A.,
Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral, has some surprising information.
*Valentine had been transposed to the 13th, with Saint Licinius ep.
left alone on the 14th!
It is just another reminder of the dangers lurking when scholars (in good
faith) are using liturgical sources printed c.1510-c.1530, or up to the
reformation in England. Many of the printed books were radically revised,
introducing new and shortlived customs entirely unknown before 1500.
Beware of the seducive words in the title of Breviaries: 'et diligenter
emendatum' - it is the arrival of humanistic scholarship, before reference
to sources came into use.
In York was it St. Valentines day today (Monday), at least in the 1530'ies (!)
All best
