medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. February) is the feast day of:
Elias of Caesarea and Companions (d. 310) This was a group of
Egyptian converts. They decided to go on a mercy mission to comfort
some other converts who had been consigned to the Cilician mines. On
their way home, they were arrested in Caesarea (Palestine), tortured,
then beheaded.
Maruthas (d. c. 415) Maruthas was bishop of Maiferkhat (Syria), near
the Persian border at the time. He tried to get imperial protection
from Persian attacks---without success. So M. went to the court of
King Yezdigerd to try to win some goodwill for the Christians. He
does indeed seem to have won some tolerance, and was thus able to
rebuild churches that had been destroyed in King Sapor's persecution.
M. also compiled the acta of the martyrs of the great Persian
persecution.
Philippa Mareri (blessed) (d. 1236) Philippa was born at Cicoli
(Abruzzi); her father was lord of Mareria. St. Francis visited and
inspired P to the religious life to such good effect that she
thwarted all her parents' efforts to marry her off. Eventually she
left home and established a hermitage with some friends. Finally she
rebuilt a deserted convent at Borgo San Pietro near Rieti. Her cult
was confirmed in 1806.
Nicholas Paglia (blessed) (d. 1256) Nicholas was an early Dominican,
won over by Dominic when he was a student at Bologna. He founded
Dominican priories at Perugia and Trani, served as prior provincial
for the Roman province, and was well known for his piety and
apparently visions. N's cult was confirmed in 1828.
