guess the community of friars at York had two outstanding friars, who worked
together as a two-span of horses.

I didn't look it up in a dictionary, but I recall looking it up when I was
working on an edition of a XII Prophets commentary last summer). I think it's a
two-horse carriage. Hence also the better-know word "quadriga", a four-horse
carriage. I guess you could also have a triga, but how you could span three
horses before a carriage is not quite clear.

I wonder if someone could tell me what the word "Biga" could mean in the
context of the phrase below. It appears in an MS of English origin (13th
century) that I am studying. After the phrase come several verses which do
nothing to clarify its meaning.
