Gawd, it +is+ pretty appalling, isn't it? I don't know which is more
ironic, Jimmy's pretensions to poetry, the idea of him giving advice on
rulership, or what ultimately happened to Charley boy.
It was Charles rather than dear dead Henry the poem was addressed to? Or
was it? History would have been different if Prince Henry hadn't been
chopped down by smallpox. Among other things, Walter Ralegh would have
ended as Lord Chancellor of England rather than on the block.
(Though I doubt even Ralegh could have swung a republic -- harder to do than
we think, our Patrick.)
