Dear list
Bryngwyn Engine House is somewhere near Bedwas, Caerphilly, South Wales (Oh
how I wish people would learn to give national grid references!!) and is the
subject of a current application for Scheduled Monument Consent for partial
demolition. Westbury Homes have apparently been given planning consent to
build housing close to it without being bound by any conditions regarding
the engine house. Now at last being pushed to do something about it they
want to demolish the walls and leave only the base structure.
The cost of this partial demolition is given as £80,750 as against £119,500
for restoration. Graham Levins on behalf of Welsh Mines Preservation Trust
has objected to the proposal and suggested to CADW that the difference in
cost be provided by themselves, Westbury Homes or HLF to restore the
building.
Bryngwyn Colliery, Bedwas, Gwent, by David Bick, was published in Archive
Magazine No. 38, June 2003, by Lightmoor Press, and describes the engine
house as "an imposing 'Inverted Cornish' engine house, of a kind which was
probably unique and is certainly so as a survivor."
So if any other engine house enthusiasts want to be involved or require
further information then you can contact Graham via the WMPT website.
Now if we had all kept up-to-date Adrian's list of engine houses we could
simply have referred to it for details ...
Regards, Simon.
