Cambridge Evening News:
'Catastrophe' of mental health budget cut
MP David Howarth has called for a "stay of
execution" for a young people's mental health service.
Mr Howarth, MP for Cambridge, urged Cambridge
City and South Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trusts
(PCTs) to consider a new financial proposal that
could save the therapeutic community, which is
part of the Young People's Service (YPS).
He said the Richmond Fellowship, one of the
biggest providers of mental health care in the
country, had offered support for the service.
The PCTs will decide on 15 proposed mental health
cuts and reorganisations, with a greater emphasis
on care in the community, next Wednesday. The
changes have been proposed because the PCTs,
which face an £18 million deficit this year, need
to cut their mental health spending by £3 million."
