Thank you, I understand now. I've always just scrolled up and down and
think I'd generally prefer that to switching back and forth from document
to document and still having to scroll (albeit less), but I can see the
appeal of smaller files.

On a Mac, some word processing applications let you simply drag and drop
images and all three I tried (AppleWorks, Mellel, and NeoOffice/J) let you
use an "Insert image" command or the like. There are quirks in AppleWorks
and Mellel: AppleWorks lets you drag multiple images but doesn't keep them
in order - of course you rearrange them easily enough by cutting and
pasting or dragging and dropping, but it's a nuisance; Mellel only lets
you drag one at a time, and you have to unselect them or each one will be
replaced by the next. I'm sure someone who knows a scripting language
could write something to automate the process, but I don't and so can't.
