CITIZENSHIP AND BELONGING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Wednesday March 29 2006, University of Leeds
The concept of citizenship and its relationship to questions of ‘belonging’
have never been more pertinent. The events of 7th July 2005, the on-going
moral panic about immigration, new equality legislation, citizenship tests,
and the broader geopolitical context of the Iraq War all have implications
for theories of citizenship and what it means to be British. They raise
questions, for example, about: the ability of different groups to claim and
maintain their rights; the cultural proficiencies necessary to be a
citizen; the extent to which particular groups have affective connections
with, or may be developing alternative forms of social commitment that
threaten their loyalty to the State; and how a truly multi-cultural state
might create full and equal citizens.
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference is to challenge and rethink
conceptual understandings of citizenship and belonging; and to explore the
different ways that these terms are or might be used and translated into
policy and practice.
