CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
GLOBAL GOVERNANCE AND LOCAL PRACTICE
Ethics, Accountability, Responsibility and Trust
An International Conference
Lancaster University 12-13 September 2006
Over recent years the ideals of accountability, responsibility and trust
with respect to public policy, the conduct of social research and the role
of professionals in a variety of fields have been much discussed.
Professional bodies have placed increasing emphasis upon ethical behaviour
by their members. Government reports have stressed the importance of
accountability and trust in public life. Research – private and public – is
regulated by global and local ethical codes of practice.
This major international conference over two days will address issues
arising from these debates. It will be hosted by the Faculty of Arts and
Social Sciences, and the Management School at Lancaster University, and
will be international and interdisciplinary in scope.
Multidisciplinary parallel sessions—organised along the themes suggested
below—will address various sub-areas including: ethics in social science
research; business ethics; legal ethics; bioethics; communication and media
ethics. An ‘ethics of research’ panel will comprise representatives of the
major academic funding bodies – ESRC, AHRC, MRC, Leverhulme, Wellcome,
Nuffield, Lottery – speaking to the questions of ethical research.
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
Frank Furedi - Professor of Sociology at University of Kent, and author of
Politics of Fear, Where Have All the Intellectuals Gone?, Therapy Culture,

Lord David Puttnam - British film producer and politician
