For those who asked me to let them know what I discovered regarding the DoE
publication I was after; here is a reply from the Author who works for the
BGS. It would appear that the reference in the SGV for Arsenic is in fact
incorrect, and it should be referring to one of the four reports that were
produced under this DoE contract that the BGS carried out for them. These
reports are

Methane, carbon dioxide and oil seeps from natural sources and
mining areas: characteristics, extent, and relevance to planning and
development in Great Britain. British Geological Survey Technical Report,
WP/95/1

Radon and background radioactivity from natural sources:
characteristics, extent, and relevance to planning and development in
Great Britain. British Geological Survey Technical Report, WP/95/2

Potentially harmful elements from natural sources and mining areas:
characteristics, extent, and relevance to planning and development in Great
Britain. British Geological Survey Technical Report, WP/95/3

Radon, methane, carbon dioxide, oil and potentially harmful element
contamination from natural sources and mining: relevance to planning and
development in Great Britain. Summary Report. British Geological Survey
Technical Report, WP/95/4

No wonder I couldnt find it anywhere!!!!

Regards

Jon

Dear Mr Parr
Attached is an explanation why you were unable to find the natural
contamination reports on the Geolib service.
The reference given in the Environment Agency's Soil Guideline Value for
Arsenic document is incorrect. The report number PECD 7/1/734 is actually a
contract number.

Good Morning

All of these reports are on Geolib. Looking at the e-mail it appears that
the enquirer was looking under the wrong title. 'Review of Natural
Contamination in Great Britain' does not appear in the titles of any of
these reports and therefore he has not retrieved 'hits'.

Hope this answers your query.

Regards.

Good morning,

Attached is my reply to a query from an external user of the Geolib service
- he was unable to locate four 1995 reports on Geolib:

APPLETON, J D, HOOKER, P J, and SMITH N J P. 1995. Methane, carbon dioxide
and oil seeps from natural sources and mining areas: characteristics,
extent, and relevance to planning and development in Great Britain. British
Geological Survey Technical Report, WP/95/1.

APPLETON J D and BALL T K. 1995. Radon and background radioactivity from
natural sources: characteristics, extent, and relevance to planning and
development in Great Britain. British Geological Survey Technical Report,
WP/95/2.

APPLETON J D. 1995. Potentially harmful elements from natural sources and
mining areas: characteristics, extent, and relevance to planning and
development in Great Britain, British Geological Survey Technical Report,
WP/95/3.

APPLETON, J D. 1995. Radon, methane, carbon dioxide, oil and potentially
harmful element contamination from natural sources and mining: relevance to
planning and development in Great Britain. Summary Report. British
Geological Survey Technical Report, WP/95/4

Is this an oversight or have old reports like these not been catalogued ?

Regards

Don

Dear Mr Parr

The first of the two attached files gives a summary of the reports produced
by the Natural Contamination research project.
The second attachment gives the text of the summary report.
Some information in these reports is now out of date as a considerable
amount of work has been done by the BGS and other organisations on radon,
methane/CO2 and PHEs since 1995.

The 1995 reports may be viewed at BGS libraries or purchased from :

I am not sure why the reports are not on the Geolib service.

Dear Sir

I am trying to track down a book you may have authored in 1995 for the then
Department of the Environment. It was titled "Review of Natural
Contamination in Great Britian".

I have searched and emailed the Geol Soc, EA, ODPM, DEFRA, British Library,
my University and the Contaminated Land community as a whole as I would like
to see the book for my thesis.

I am waiting for a reply from the ODPM and the EA at this moment. I have
searched the BGS's GeoLib Service and can only find an Abstract for a
Conference held in Keyworth in the mid 1990's. I do not know if this is
what I am searching for as the book is referenced in the Environment
Agency's Soil Guideline Value for Arsenic.

Could you please confirm to me if it is the paper from the Conference that
is being referred to or an actual book.

Regards
