I always used Mesa >= 6.0.1 with my Quadro FX 500, can't now remember
whether that was due to similar issues.

There's a more recent kernel to try

32 bit or 64 bit?

There's an update (pointing your yum at rpm.livna.org is a nice way of
keeping the NVidia drivers up to date). Could be doing things with e.g.
the AGP settings despite using Mesa for the actual program. The update
might even cure your random crashes when using the NVidia accelerated
drivers.
