2005/6 Colston Lecture on Science and Society
Wednesday, 15th March 2006
4.15 pm Fletcher Hall, NIMR
Jon Turney
Public understanding of biosciences.
The annual Colston Lecture is part of the Mill Hill Lecture series,
held at the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill,
London. The lecture provides a focal point at NIMR for discussion of
Science & Society issues and stimulates greater awareness of the need
for dialogue with the public.
The lecture will draw a little on social research about public
understanding - why we might want some, and how to assess it. But the
bulk of it will be drawn from Jon Turney's experience reading about
bioscience, and trying to write about it.
In particular, he will explore which are the dominant ways of
explaining modern bioscience, and whether they will help develop
portrayals of some of the more complex developments of current
research. Realistically, our expectations here should probably be
limited. But we might start thinking about explaining what is
actually going on in three related domains - genomics, cell biology
and immunology? What are the barriers to understanding, and how
might they be overcome?
Jon Turney is a science writer, editor and reviewer of many years'
standing. He has worked as a science reporter, features editor,
(briefly) a civil servant, an academic and a publisher. He now spends
part of his time as science consultant for Penguin Press, in addition
to writing his own books, and leading the MSc in Creative non-fiction
at Imperial College.
