Hunterian Museum shortlisted for Gulbenkian Prize
I am delighted to tell you that the Hunterian Museum at the Royal
College of Surgeons has made it through to the shortlist for the 2006
Gulbenkian Museum of the Year Award. We are one of four museums still in
the running. We will now be waiting with baited breath for the
announcement of the winner in May. We are particularly grateful to those
of you who have given comments of support on the Gulbenkian Prize
website at www.thegulbenkianprize.org.uk - and remember if you have not
done so it's not too late to add your voice!
The news has capped an exciting year for us, with over 35,000 visitors
to the museum since our reopening. At the moment the Qvist Gallery in
the Hunterian Museum is showing 'Hip Histories', exploring the
development of the artificial hip. We also have a small exhibition 'Kill
or Cure' in the Inner Hall of the College, which reveals some early
medical treatments that will make even the most hardy wince.
Forthcoming public lectures on the 'Kill or Cure' theme include Dr
Adrian Padfield on 'Painful Controversies: ether versus chloroform' and
Kevin Brown, Curator of the Alexander Fleming Museum, on 'A night with
Venus, a lifetime with Mercury: the treatment of syphilis before
antibiotics'.
For booking details, opening times and any other information please
visit our website at www.rcseng.ac.uk/museums or call us on 020 7869
6560.
The Hunterian Museum is open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday. Admission to
permanent and temporary exhibitions is free. There is also a free public
tour on Wednesdays at 1pm.
Please note that the Hunterian Museum is closed on Good Friday and
Easter Saturday when the College is closed. Normal opening hours resume
on Tuesday 18 April.
