Nice easy question! Basically enabling other people/services to use your
information. The term 'web 2.0' is fairly vague, but would include
* RSS newsfeeds (as 24HM already does)
* publishing an API of the service (as the BBC has been doing
with Backstage, or Google does with Google maps)
* OAI and Web Services (as the MLA People's Network Discover
service already does).
This will mean that, for example, a website developed for a regional or
theme-based audience could present relevant information (news, events,
collections etc) from another source to its core audience.
This is the intention behind developments in a couple of regions,
subject specialist networks and the 24 Hour Museum itself.
You can see some of this approach in action as
www.cornucopia.org.uk <http://www.cornucopia.org.uk/>
was initially developed as a database of museum collections, but is now
also powering
http://www.findit.org.uk/ - this is just library collections within
Cornucopia
and is also available within the Peoples Network Service
http://www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk/discover/ - this also includes
item-level records harvested from other databases, such as the
Fitzwilliam Museum or English Heritage Viewfinder
(work is on-going to improve the presentation of records within the
service)
Try doing a search for 'Lace' in all 3 services and you will see what I
mean.

Would it be possible to outline what the 'web 2.0' approach to data
sharing involves?
Thanks

Have you talked to the 24 Hour Museum about this?
They already have many of the facilities you are talking about, and have
an existing audience of 10 million users a year for museum-related
activity ...
They are just embarking on a rebuild of the site to enable more of a
'Web 2.0' approach to data-sharing. It is also worth noting that the
ideas being discussed for the rebuild include customised front-ends for
the site in the same way that the Untold London website is already
driven from the 24 Hour Museums basic data.

Does anyone know of or can recommend a company to supply and host a
product to deliver mix'n'match listings of events/activities/exhibitions
over the web. We've tried 'Trumba' but too basic... any suggestions?
Functionality needs to include remote password access for multiple
inputters, image upload preferably with resampling, custom fields,
ability
to add metadata to allow output according to location, theme etc.
We've got a modest budget which could extend into four figures.
*sorry - cross posted*
thanks
