The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the
health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a
critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in
preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation
occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-
terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.
The Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response makes extensive use of
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), within Microbial Risk Assessment, to
help assess the risk to the general population from new, emerging and re-
emerging infectious diseases. GIS also supports emergency response
functions for natural or deliberate release scenarios and is used with
mathematical disease transmission models and atmospheric dispersion models
to help determine intervention strategies through population impact
assessments. National cover of many Ordnance Survey mapping, demographic,
environmental and epidemiological datasets are stored within Oracle and
accessed by ArcGIS using ArcSDE. MapInfo GIS is also used within certain
projects.
Microbial Risk Asssessment has responsibility for administering the
Ordnance Survey Pan Government Agreement (PGA) on behalf of the HPA. The
GIS support scientist will support this important function through
provision of mapping data to requesting HPA Departments and responding to
requests for custom mapping, training and general GIS support throughout
the organisation
Educated to degree standard in a GIS or Environmental subject with exposure
to GIS, you should have an interest in the application and uptake of GIS
within a large organisation and willingness to learn. Preference will be
given to candidates with experience of ArcGIS or MapInfo. Good
