Hello everyone (especially those in London and the South-East), apologies
for the long email but bear with me and hopefully it will help you decide if
you can help at all!
I am looking for contact suggestions for an artist/crafts person for one of
the sessions I am planning for a half-day family workshop at the Museum of
Garden History on a Wednesday afternoon in August (and subsequently). Any
names of individuals and/or organisations and a brief line of
intro/recommendation plus contact details (plus any comments on HASW etc.)
would be welcome asap.
We have a small library area for discreet activities after an introductory
tour of the museum/garden, but can't do too much which is 'messy' or needs a
lot of individual space! Other sessions we are running have worked well for
up to 2.5 hours and about 20 people (parents/carers and children from 4/5 to
11/12).
My idea is to focus on something relevant to our new local history ex area's
display of objects, wall images and as incorporated within an acccompanying
DVD/audio, as well as a few other items of interest in the main museum area
and garden. I have £200 to £250 max to spend on the session overall.
There are several themes or ideas which could be picked up:
(A) Models or objects reflecting some of the items in our display which
refer to industrial activities which were nearby, eg (i) matchstick or other
models relating to modes of transport which used to be seen in this part of
London especially (model Vauxhall motor cars as the company started at V,
model Sainsbury vans as Sainsbury's also started here) as well as river
barges and launches, tube lines and buses (ii) candles, perhaps
incorporating flower scents or petals (iii) 'kaleidoscope-type' idea picking
up on lenses and Dolland's spectacles, perhaps also linking into the garden
colours/shapes etc., (iv) fine arts such as Doulton pottery and Coade stone
statuary/sculpture.
(B) Models or objects inspired by some of the interesting buildings etc. in
the area, eg the Italianate remaining edifice of the Doulton building,
churches, old terraces, County Hall, the London Eye, Houses of Parliament,
bridges.
(C) Creative music, dance or costume design/participation orientated
activity to celebrate some of the entertainment history in the area, ranging
from Charlie Chaplin, the Lambeth Walk/music hall type theatre, other
theatre, circuses and gardens with entertainments (most famously the
Vauxhall Gardens).
Thank you in anticipation, Fiona Hope
