Special issue of System, March 2008:
Second language listening
This is the first announcement of a Special Issue of System which is
planned for March 2008.
It will be on the subject of second language listening, reflecting the
contribution that the journal has made to studies in this area over many
years. The Guest Editor will be John Field, University of Reading, UK.
In the first instance, intending authors are requested to submit proposals
of 300-500 words to the Guest Editor. The deadline for submissions is 30th
November 2006. The proposed papers must focus on listening issues which
arise in relation to the teaching of English or of any other modern
language. They must have a sound theoretical basis and should ideally make
clear their practical applications to the teaching or assessment of the
skill. Given the goals of the journal, papers are especially welcome on any
of the following areas: * Interfaces between L2 listening theory / practice
and findings in areas such as speech science, psycholinguistics, phonetics
and phonology, computer modelling, neurology or discourse analysis; * The
applications of technology (including IT) to the teaching and testing of L2
listening; * The effects of cognitive demands upon the L2 listener; *
Decoding or meaning building in L2 listening or the relationship between
them; * The acquisition of a receptive L2 system of phonology; * Research
validating the methodology and materials used in order to teach and test L2
listening; * Empirical evidence of the use of listening strategies; * The
possible effects of individual listening style upon performance; * The
effects of the first language upon L2 listening; the issue of
intelligibility as viewed from the perspective of the listener; *
Comparison of L2 listening processes across two different target languages.
Proposals, which should not have been submitted elsewhere, should be sent
by e-mail attachment to John Field at j.c.field@ reading.ac.uk or
[log in to unmask], and should include author's name and e-mail details.
From the proposals, a number will be chosen by anonymous review by a panel
of specialists; note that selection at this stage does not guarantee
publication. Authors will be notified early in 2007 of the outcome of the
review; and the deadline for the submission of full papers will be 15th May
2007. Papers should confirm to the usual word length of 5000 words maximum
and to the house style of the journal (see author's instruction on the
website at: www.elsevier.com/locate/system).
A final selection will be made by the panel; and versions incorporating any
proposed revisions will need to be submitted by a deadline in September
2007.
All enquiries about the Special Issue should be directed to John Field at
the e-mail address above.
