(MathPhon I)
Orleans - 31 Aout - 1er Septembre 2006
Mathematique d'Orleans auquel appartient M. Bergounioux,
Symposium:: Mathematics and phonology - Mathematical modelling tools in
phonology (MathPhon I)
Orleans August, 31st / September 1st
The Mathematics and Phonology symposium is an international event of
unprecedented scale. Mathematicians specialising in statistics,
modelling, PDEs, or signal processing and phonologists originating from
a whole range of backgrounds - Generative phonology and CVCV,
Optimality theory, Laboratory phonology, cognitive phonology, acquisition -
will examine their methods and results on the same field ...
phonology ... in an effort to put to the test the validity and the scope of
mathematical models. A similar collaboration is already at work
within the context of the ACI, Complex SHS Systems which has been named:
"towards a dynamic model of the emergence of symbolic representations
in speech processing." (http://www.lpl.univ-aix.fr/~nguyen/sys_comp.html).
The conference is intended to open new opportunities for collaboration
between two fields intimately involved with formalism as well as providing
an opportunity to assess the divergence and converging of their theories.
The topic of the symposium is purposely opened to all schools of thought
and all different areas of the field. Phonology, and more widely
language-science-related phenomena have hardly ever been touched upon
by the mathematical community apart from statistics- and logic-based
analyses, a dialogue with physics, signal processing (acoustic and
phonetic) and the modelling of the vocal apparatus (wave mechanics,
resonance). The practicality of the different formalisms, the diversity of
notations and the spectacular increase of data creates a space and a need
for new tools. The stress will be put on modelling.
The symposium is organised by both the CORAL (centre Orleanais de Recherche
en Anthropologie et linguistique dirige par Gabriel Bergounioux) and the
MAPMO (Mathematiques et applications Physique Mathematique d'Orleans which
counts amongst its members Ms Bergounioux, a mathematician) at the university
of Orleans on the 31st of August and the 1st of September 2006. A one-hour
plenary conference, a 45-min communication session, a poster session and
a "maths for phonology" tutorial are scheduled.
Submissions should be sent before April 20th 2006 to Sophie Wauquiers

Colloquium: Phonetic bases of distinctive features
3 July, 2006
Keynote speaker: Kenneth N. Stevens
Held in Paris, France, organised by a working group of phonologists and
phoneticians at the Laboratory of Phonetics and Phonology (LPP),
CNRS/Sorbonne-nouvelle, Paris.
Conference website: http://ed268.univ-paris3.fr/lpp/phonetic_bases/index.html
BACKGROUND. This one-day colloquium, which follows LabPhon 10 by two
days, explores issues in the phonetic definition of distinctive
features. Quantal theory, developed by Kenneth N. Stevens and his
collaborators at MIT, is among the recent approaches which has most
successfully integrated phonetic and phonological appraoches to the study
of sound structure. This theory proposes that the phonetic categories
commonly used across languages to define sound inventories and phonological
processes are defined in terms of "natural" discontinuities between
articulatory parameters and their acoustic effects, and between acoustic
parameters and their perceptual effects. While this approach has been very
influential in recent work, many questions remain open.
At the colloquium, the following questions may be raised, among
others: What are the features and how are they defined? Why do features
exploit certain articulatory-acoustic dimensions instead of others? Do all
features have quantal acoustic or auditory boundaries? Do feature
definitions vary across languages? How robust are proposed feature
attributes under different conditions (e.g. speaker, speech rate, segment
class, phonological and prosodic context)? Under what conditions are
feature-based contrasts enhanced? What is the role of features in language
acquisition, lexical recognition, and the perception of native and
non-native languages? What is their cognitive status? Discussion will
draw upon various perspectives, including phonetic, phonological,
psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic, and developmental.
