I don't think that "caulking" has quite the same meaning. The definition
in Chambers' dictionary is "to render watertight by pressing oakum, etc.
into the seams" and the OED agrees. The only examples are of filling
gaps in ships' seams and in windows to prevent leaks and draughts.
The function we are considering is as a means of fixing metal into
stone, generally into a blind hole, and there is nothing to leak or be
stopped up.
It's interesting to see how many people have been stimulated to
contribute to this thread. If we have the same interest for each of the
several thousand other terms in any given thesaurus, we have enough
material to keep this list active for the next century . . . :-)
