Agreed but there is always more information to be gleaned from public
authorities. Private companies, and I have worked with many, even
lawyers but I never heard DP mentioned until I entered the public sector
and that was what made me more aware of what was happening with my
personal information. Also, Simon, the majority of people on this list
are from public authorities.

I agree that for public bodies the FOI is a huge animal, but it's
irrelevant for most businesses - they have only to comply with DPA.

What extra power...I am getting everyone coming in on FoI - even when
they ask for personal information. Yes, there is powers for the public
to amend their data etc., there are powers to have not only computer
held records but paper records too...
Sorry, I disagree - FoI is a much bigger animal and we only have 20
working days to respond...and the Scottish Information Commissioner is a
force to be reckoned with and don't we know it.

Whilst the 1984 Act has been around for a while, the 1998 is significant
in the extra power it potentially gives the public. I therefore think
it's a "grower", and I tend to discount 84 - 98 for that reason.

I can't see DP being taken more seriously. I have been doing this job
for about 8 years now - it came into being in 1984, so here we are 20+
years on. I have had in total about 10 Subject Access requests in all
that time. I was therefore driven into a false sense of security when
FoI came into being and thought it would probably die a quick death but
lo and behold it has grown arms and legs and am having difficulty
keeping up....

For me it's more than just notfication (which they should do away with,
or get better at enforcing). It's the problem with attitude. Business
will only do something when there is a pressure from somewhere - public,
Parliament etc.
You can do what you like to put forward why taking Information Privacy
seriously has business benefits, but there is obvious cost involved, and
unless there is a driver sufficient to get the car started (forgive the
analogy), it won't happen.
Think back to the Health & Safety Act, it came about 20+ years ago but
it's only in the past 8 years or so that it has really started to be
taken seriously by most businesses. I think that the DPA is potentially
the same, it will take a while for the momentum to build up and then it
will become all pervading (maybe).
However in the meantime us evangelists are trying to preach the gospel
to a heathen community! Fortunately there are plenty of businesses out
there who are willing to move forward, and they are the ones who will
have a head start.
Simon.

You say it's unfortunate, but is it really?
As has been mentioned here several times, it's really little more than
yet another tax on having a business. What benefits are there for a
small business to notify? Surely most only do it because they believe
they have to?
If there's no come back for those who don't, then why bother?
(Of course I'm not saying that everyone shouldn't ahere to all the
principles of data processing etc, this is just about notification)
