As well as what Richard said, F2003 introduced a
NEWUNIT= integer-variable in the OPEN statement.
This at least makes the processor manage the unit numbers.
The user no longer has to guess what numbers can be used without
colliding with some other use. It's not as good as a derived type,
but it's a start. Every OPEN can be guaranteed to get a
unique unit.
