We have a single sys admin account for our academic liaison librarians
to use (we're part of Learning resources) - they have been deeply
involved in Blackboard since our day 1 in 2002 and have done excellent
work supporting amenable academics.
However, Malcolm's BB sounds very interesting. Planning to share,

Last year we rolled out a custom building block that is only visible to
Librarians. We initially tried enrolling a special librarian account in
all 10,000 current courses, but this was unusable - the "Courses" tab
wouldn't render.
The building block allows them to enroll into any current course and
adds them using a special data source key. It also lists all courses
they are currently enrolled in with this DSK and allows them to unenroll
when they have finished. As such they can dip in and out of courses as
they wish.
We grant them one of two roles. Most of the Librarians are enrolled as
students in the courses. But a select group of 'super librarians' are
given instructor access.
Normally the librarians are just viewing the courses and looking at the
information resources available to staff and students. If they see
anything there that they want to change then they contact an instructor
on the course first to talk things over.
We got the University Teaching & Learning Committee to approve this
right to access and make it clear to all teaching staff that staff from
the Library may visit their course.
To date feedback has been very positive, and staff seem pleased to take
recommendations from the Librarians.

We are currently looking at the role of our Subject Librarians within
Blackboard. As they work very closely with academics they have
suggested
having role which allows them to add content to course areas (as long
as
the academic is happy with this). This will obviously mean enrolling
our
Librarians in every course for their particular subject, so I would be
grateful for suggestions as to the recommended course role which they
should be allocated, and also any experiences of Librarians having this
level of involvement within Blackboard at your own University (positive
or
otherwise).
