Law and litigation: court records from manorial to central
5 March 2007

This course has been designed for archivists who work in repositories
holding court records, and aims to impart a thorough understanding of the
history, structure and uses of court records. Manorial, Church, the
Quarter Sessions and central courts will all be covered in a comprehensive
survey of the rich history of Englands justice system. Speakers will
lecture on specific types of court records throughout the ages, from the
early manorial courts, to the 19th and 20th century central courts, and
from local justice to centralised county and UK courts. Each speaker will
illustrate the history of the courts, from their origins to their final
form, and will discuss how the courts functioned and the types of records
associated with them.
Course aims:
· To impart a thorough understanding of the history of English courts.
· To introduce delegates to the types of court records available and
what they contain.
· To show delegates how court records can be used for research.
