Dear all,
Our lab just discontinued Osmolar Gap as a pre-request test for
approval for Stat Alcohol and Glycol analysis by Gas Chromatography. I
am wondering how it happens in your lab regarding the criteria for
ordering Alcohol and Glycol analysis. As this is the major clinical use
of plasma osmolality, what other clinical circumstances are the test
being requested? Has the test still being kept in your lab? Is it a
reliable method? Can it be replaced by other approaches to management of
patients, such as Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD).
Many thanks for your response!
