We did much the same at St Georges in the 1970s and Lewisham in the
1980s by repositioning boxes.
Put LFTs under U&E - work doubles !
Remove iron, urate and electrophoresis boxes - work reduced to 1/3.
Tried no boxes for a while - severe criticism from users and also
reception staff who were unable to read the handwritten requests.
Now have request form with some boxes. If you tick all the boxes you
get 20 tests.
Result - pat on the back for controlling demand in the new UK
Audit/Healthcare Commission report !
Will we ever get interactive rule based electronic requesting ?

I removed the tick box for thyroid function testing from our hospital
request form and the thyroid function requests dropped by 30% in 8
months. This reduction is sustainable.
We never had a tick box for CRP, they write it on manually. I
presented data on the cost and usefulness of CRP to the medical staff,
which resulted in a 40% decrease in 4 months. There is now a rebound
and 15 months later we are at about 80% of the peak request rate.

Hi all
Does anyone have any objective experience that the simple expedient of
removing a tick box for CRP from a request form has a significant
effect
on requesting?
