Formerly known as Pseudomonas cepacia or Pseudomonas
multivorans , the species was moved to the new genus,
Burkholderia, in 1992.
We have cultured the above organism from our Architect water supply.
Abbott should we aware of the problem of contamination from this organism
and the folate assay on the Architect platform. We have tried to manage it
by installing 0.2 um filters between the instrument and our recirculating
water system, minimising any blind loops in the water supply where this
biofilm producing organism may thrive, every Monday morning (after sitting
over weekend) flush out line to ARM and unloading wash buffer (through
maintenance menu) - we no longer permit staff to physically remove the bulk
reservoir without emptying first. As well as this we monitor the RLU on
the Zero calibrator - on our instrument significant contamination occurs
when the RLU values drop below 800000. Once the this occurs we call in
Abbott to decontaminate the instrument - replace filters etc.
Abbott would be unlikely to recommend any stronger decontamination
procedure because of the regulatory restraints and the cost of validating
any new procedure for all Architect assays (not just Folate).
