There is no easy answer, Iain. However, a problem shared is a problem
lessened.
'We' in our Trust is the multidisciplinary team. Our Trust POCT Committee
has active Senior Nurse representatives who understand the Risk Management
consequences of poor practice. This means that problems with nurses' roles
are dealt with as nursing issues through the accepted nurse management
channels. We support the senior nurses by providing the scientific and
technical rationale. In this way a 'less interested' nurse or ward finds it
difficult to avoid the issue. Realistically the ward resource requirements
for POCT are put alongside the other demands on the ward and can be
discussed at a senior managerial level.
We're also using technology to control and influence what is happening at
ward level. All staff have barcoded staff ID badges which are scanned into
the meters for every test. The staff details are held on a database linked
to the meters and unregistered staff are locked out. This provides an
'incentive' for wards to find themselves a link nurse.
We couldn't have achieved this without the support and cooperation of our
nurse colleagues.
