PH.D. POSITION
Closing date 21 August 2006
Job Reference 36/2006 by 21st August
UFZ - Research for the Environment
Being an international competence centre for environmental research, UFZ is investigating the interaction between man and environment in used and disturbed landscapes. UFZ develops concepts and methods to assure a healthy environment for future generations.
The divisions of Computational Environmental Systems and Social Sciences are currently seeking a highly motivated
PHD student (m/f)
to work on
"Modelling residential mobility and effects for urban transport in shrinking regions"
within the research programme of the UFZ and should be able to start in October 2006. The PhD position will be part of a new emerging group within the UFZ focussing on modelling of urban systems and processes. The main subject of this PhD position will be the further development of an urban model, including the analysis of parameter sensitivity and effectiveness (modelling-based approach), that is supposed to answer questions such as: What are the effects of demographic change and related new household patterns on residential mobility? And what are the consequences for travel patterns in a shrinking region? The focus of the interdisciplinary PhD research (together with modelling experts, social scientists and transportation researchers) at the UFZ will be on
1. the elaboration of household related preferences of residential mobility under conditions of urban shrinkage and perforation (a social science-based approach),
2. the estimation of the effects of residential relocations in shrinking regions on travel patterns and modes and, finally,
3. a scenario approach for assessing possible further developments of shrinking urban regions and its consequences on housing and travel.
The successful candidate should be motivated to work within an interdisciplinary team. Experience with agent-based spatially explicit or LUTI (land use-transport-interaction) models is highly appreciated. A degree in landscape ecology, urban planning, computational science, urban engineering, urban sociology, transportation research or related areas is expected. Skills in programming (e.g., Java, C++ or similar) or GIS software (e.g., ArcView or ArcGIS) as well as statistical data analysis are essential.
The place of work is Leipzig.
Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level TVÖD (13/2).
Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research.
Physically handicapped person will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
