Transportation Research Board 

3rd Urban Street Symposium 

Uptown, Downtown, or Small Town: Designing Urban Streets That Work 

Summer 2007 Seattle, Washington 

ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

 

Symposium Purpose 

The purpose of the Urban Street Symposium is to stimulate improvements in suburban/urban street design practices. It will provide a forum to 

􀁸 compare and debate alternative street design practices, 

􀁸 Document better street designs, and 

􀁸 transfer urban street research findings to state agencies and to local government

It will focus on the latest research, policies, and practices for street geometric design, including safety and operational effects. The previous Symposia proved that practitioners, policy makers, and researchers face similar issues and learn much by sharing their challenges and successes with concerned colleagues. 

 

 

 

 

If you would like to be considered for the Symposium program, please submit an abstract. 

Possible Symposium Topics 

Access Management 

Capacity of Urban Streets 

Context Sensitive Design 

Cross Section Design 

Design for the Disabled (ADA) 

Design for Bicycle, or Pedestrian Needs 

Design of Cross Section and Profile at Driveways 

Design Related to Intersection Operations 

Designing Streets to Enhance Transit Service 

Intersection of Urban Streets and Light Rail 

On-Street Parking 

Public Involvement 

Relationship of Design to Safety 

Relationship of Design to Operating Speed 

Roundabouts 

Self Enforcing Streets 

Signal Design (detectors, mast arm location, etc.)

Street Design for the CBD or other special area 

Traffic Calming 

Visualization 

Abstracts should be no more than one page in length, and may be on any of the topics listed above or any topic relevant to the Symposium. Include your preferred presentation mode: 

                        ** Paper: Write a paper on your research or what you are doing in the field of urban street design. 

                        ** Panel Discussion: Give a five-minute review on a subject and join a panel to lead discussion and answer audience questions. 

                        ** Displays/Posters: Show your recent project using pictures, a model, or computer graphics during the opening night reception. 

                        ** Workshop: Present a hands-on session in the area of street design.

Submit abstracts as an attached Word or PDF document to an e-mail with 

“USS3 abstract your name” 

In subject line. 

Submit Abstracts by September 30, 2006 to:

Authors will be notified in January 2007. 

All accepted papers and/or presentations must be made available to TRB in electronic format by May 15, 2007 for inclusion in the Symposium proceedings.
