I am showing my students "research culture at work" so I decided to
analyse simsoc. In the best traditions of research, I am now feeding the
results back to my subjects for your amusement/edification.
Between January and June 2006, there were 117 posts in the following

Interestingly, the number of CFP was only 9 less than the total number
of individuals who posted over the same period! (Note that allowance
must be made for repeated CFP however.)
Clearly, professional information considerably outweighs "substantive"
discussion but it is heartening that there were no "terms and
conditions" emails or off topic posts at all.
Only 5 threads contained more than one post (2 each with 2 and 3 and 1
with 7) also supporting the view that the list is more broadcast than
