CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Outreach Coordinator for the International Heliophysical Year
(Part Time, 1.5 days/week)
The International Heliophysical Year (IHY) is a major international
scientific programme timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of
the International Geophysical Year of 1957 and officially begins on
March 1st 2007. Background information on the overall IHY programme
can be found at ihy2007.org with information specific to the UK at
ihy2007.org.uk. In addition to an extensive programme of scientific
activities an important element of IHY is promoting heliophysics to a
wider audience. The CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, on behalf of
the UK IHY Consortium, is looking to appoint an IHY Outreach
Coordinator to support this activity in the UK.
The post-holder will: collect and disseminate information on IHY;
devise, lead, co-ordinate and support activities promoting IHY science
to the public; coordinate the communications activities for IHY with
those of the other IGY+50 years, specifically International Polar Year
(IPY) and the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). These
activities will be overseen by a committee with representation from
the UK IHY Consortium.
The role requires someone who is self-directed and has the excellent
interpersonal skills necessary to be effective in supporting teams
from across the UK. Enthusiasm for communicating scientific ideas to
non-specialist audiences is essential, with experience in this being
highly desirable. Suitable candidates are likely to have personal
research experience in some area of solar system science, and must be
capable of acquiring understanding of other areas rapidly.
The post will start in September 2006 and run for an initial period of
12 months with a possible extension of a further 6 months. It will be
part-time at the level of approximately 1.5 days per week and pay is
negotiable. The post-holder will be expected to work from his or her
existing institute or from home, and be prepared to travel within the
UK as required.
This post, and a related public-facing website, is funded by PPARC as
part of its Science and Society programme.
