Ken (and everyone else on the list)

We have run two Science in Society seminars on topics that will be of
interest to you here. All reports and relevant links from all 5
seminars are available at
http://www.the-ba.net/the-ba/ScienceinSociety/ESRC_Seminars/ESRC_Seminar
s.htm

The seminars you will be most interested in were, How do we communicate
uncertainty and risk? Nick Pidgeon sharing his research on 'Public
perceptions of risk, science and governance') and How is scientific
knowledge made, communicated and understood? (Laura Potts sharing her
research on bridging differential understandings of environmental risk
of breast cancer)

While we are on the subject there are still a few places left at the
next science in society lunchtime seminar on Tuesday 6 June.

How do NGOs commission, communicate and contest science?
Tuesday 6 June 2006 12:45 - 14:15, Dana Centre, South Kensington
How do non-governmental organisations commission, communicate and
contest environmental science in order to influence public debate? How
can we broker better relationships between scientists and those who
translate their work into public debate? Do business and environmental
NGOs consume and use science differently and what are the boundaries
they set between science and non-science? Are there similarities in how
different groups use and understand science?

Dr Sally Eden, Department of Geography, University of Hull and lead
researcher on the ESRC-funded project 'Contesting environmental science:
business and environmentalist NGOs' will discuss her research and will
be followed by a response from Doug Parr, Greenpeace.

Places are FREE and include lunch, but must be pre-booked. To book,
email [log in to unmask] or call 020 7019 4938.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Experts in risk communication to the public

Dear All,

Does anyone have details of individuals specialising in the
communication of risk to the public? I'm particulary keen to hear from
those with an understanding/view on how the use of risk comparisons can
help the public put into perspective the risk of cancer from exposure to
selected environmental chemical carcinogens. They would then be invited
to attend a meeting organised by the Committee on Carcinogenicity at the
Department of Health in London on 13 July 2006.

Please get in touch if you (or you know any one who I can contact that)
could take part in our discussions.

Best wishes,

Ken Okona-Mensah
