You are quite right. I am very happy with my PhD, which I gained in a
School of Management Systems and Sciences. The methodology underpinning
my research was qualitative in character, which puts me on the wrong
side of the fence for some of our colleagues, and did involve
'designerly enquiry' in that my investigation involved visualization and
analysis of the spatial metaphor in organizational design (specifically
museum design organization). This, of course, put me outside the
mainstream of qualitative management research also.
Perhaps there are too many fences trying to enclose too many fields. The
image of cattle on the open range comes to mind and (I'm afraid I don't
know the man and his work) maybe Dyson would have greater sympathy with
this? Is the doctorate, amongst other things, a sign of having accepted,
however grudgingly, the institutional order of things? Well, yes, it is.
And even a maverick carries a brand, the one of their own devising.
