Some really key points have been added to this thread already, but I would certainly support firstly pursuing those opportunities that feel pertinent and useful to one's own distinctive sense of project, and also considering the interesting significant differences involved in both kinds of outputting of research. These include the conventions and formal requirements of publishers and/or conference organisers, the kinds of timescales involved, the different audiences each will bring, the different forms of review your work will receive, and the opportunities for different forms of feedback and continued dialogue. Having been involved in both forms of dissemination of my work, I find each satisfying in different ways, and I don't belive it need be an either/or decision...
