I'm with sean: spit don't swallow in memory of John Latham!
mark
I have also been meaning to write about re-enactment and mystery plays in
Renaissance Europe in particular reference not only to the work of Nina and
Karen: Sometime Later but also the expenditure accounted for by George
Battaile in the Trial of Gilles De Rais which was lavished on a year long
re- enactment of the Siege of Orleans in which Jean D'Arc defeated the
English. What is extraordinary about the account is that this demonic
figure haunted the stage playing himself whilst also employing actors. One
could read this as an act of pathological narcissism but it is also a
subaltern history. A surfacing of perspective which is overwritten through
the discourses of power and territorialisation.
Evidently he also played for the whole hospitality budget for the city too
which led to his decent into alchemical practices to repair his debts and
his fall....

Hi all very sad about John Latham, yes.
There is a wonderful video of him here, from December 2004:
http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/exhibitions/latham/furtherresources.shtm.
He will be missed.
Best,
Jemima
