Research Associate / Research Fellow

Smoking Cessation
Division of Primary Care, Public and Occupational Health
This post offers an enthusiastic and committed person an opportunity for
personal academic and professional development in one of the largest and
most successful university departments of primary care in the UK. The
successful applicant will be appointed to either a Research Associate or a
Research Fellow role, depending on their qualifications and experience, and
ability to fulfil the aspects of the role. They will be responsible for all
aspects of the day-to-day running of a study into smoking cessation,
including day-to-day involvement with the NHS, the management of study
databases, recruitment, and also managing data collection and preparing
initial drafts of reports for project steering group meetings and for
publications. 
 
Interested applicants should have a degree or higher degree in the case of
Research Fellows, in a relevant biomedical or social science subject, have
knowledge of research processes and experience of project management.

Research Associate

This post offers an enthusiastic and committed person an opportunity for

Kingdom. The majority of the post holder's time would be engaged in managing
and delivering the research protocol requirements. The project research
associate will be responsible for all aspects of day-to-day running of the
pilot study, including management study databases, recruitment, working with
PCTs and smoking cessation clinics, and also managing data collection and
preparing initial drafts of reports for project steering group meetings and
for publication.S/he will be supported by a part-time (0.5 WTE) project
secretary who will provide essential administrative and secretarial support
to the research fellow, PIs, project, trial, steering and BMEG Advisory
Groups. Both members of staff will be employed for the duration of the
project. There is an opportunity for PhD registration, supervisory
arrangements are in line with the University requirements for postgraduate
students.

Role Purpose

To deliver the goals of the trial within budget and within the specified
timescale to an acceptable quality standard defined by acceptance of the
research outcomes for peer review.

Main Responsibilities

*	To develop a research delivery plan. 

*	To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques,
models and methods in collaboration with colleagues 

*	To contribute to the production of research reports and publications


*	To prepare papers for steering groups and other bodies 

*	To collect data for trial according to protocol

Trial management

*	Key role is to deliver effective day to day operational management
of the trial 

*	To develop and sustain an effective working relationship with the
district smoking cessation co-ordinators and through them the smoking
cessation advisors. 

*	Attend smoking cessation groups, to train smoking cessation team
members to advise potential participants about the study, and provide a
contact for participants during the trial. 

*	To be accountable for the financial elements of the research
project, and to develop and maintain a professional relationship with the
trial sponsor. 

*	To organise the collection of high quality data required by the
trial protocol. 

*	Work effectively with the study secretary to maintain the trial
database. Manage and support the research secretary in his/her tasks as
required. 

*	Liaison with all parties involved in the trial, both internal and
external to the University (community smoking cessation co-ordinators,
project sponsor etc). 

*	Anticipate problems and devise strategies to overcome them as part
of operational project management. Contribute to the development/design of
the trial information systems. 

*	Ensure that the trial is conducted according to the applicable
ethical, regulatory, reporting and quality requirements (i.e. informed
consent, ethics committee correspondence, and regulatory bodies)

Education, teaching and supervision

*	Organising training sessions in conjunction with the research
secretary- identifying venues, identifying attendees, determining the
programme, identifying speakers and leading the session 

*	Ensure that the contribution and conduct of all those involved with
the trial (i.e. community smoking cessation advisors) are properly
supervised and familiar with the trial protocol as to ensure the proper and
consistent conduct of the study

Personal research projects and self development

*	Be involved with evaluating and commenting on new research protocols


*	The post holder is encourage to develop his/her research skills and
related projects 

*	Encouraged to undertake a PhD 

*	To contribute to the design, analysis, publication and presentation
of the research 

*	It is required that the post holder keeps up to date with current
research literature and developments in both the professional field and the
specialist research area of nicotine addiction and smoking cessation in
Bangladeshi and Pakistani people.
