The Department of Science and Technology Studies, UCL, seeks to appoint one
or several Teaching Fellows to replace staff on sabbatical or teaching
release for the 2006/7 session.
The following courses require tutors:
1. HPSC 1008 Introduction to Science Communication
2. HPSC 2002 Science in the Mass Media
3. HPSC 3013 The 'New Genetics' and Society
4. HPSC 3018 Outsiders in Science
Applicants are expected to follow previous syllabi, or to provide a strong
rationale for variation. Assessment methods must remain unchanged. Teaching
times are set and normally cannot be changed. Specific information on each
course, and timetables, is on-line: <www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/syllabus.htm>.
Alternative courses may be substituted in exceptional circumstances.
. For HPSC 1008 and HPSC 3013, the work normally consists of 30 contact
hours (10 1-hour lectures and 2 duplicate sets of 10 1-hour seminars) plus
assessment and regular office hours.
. For other courses, the work normally consists of 20 contact hours (as
1-hour lectures or seminars), plus assessment and regular office hours.
. Additional teaching on other courses may be offered, paid on an hourly
rate.
Candidates should have a PhD, or be close to submission, in a related field.
They also should have at least two years experience in undergraduate
teaching, including development of lecture and tutorial materials, and
should show the range of interests and skills necessary to supervise
students. Preference will be given to applicants who can deliver several of
these courses. Each course amounts to approximately twenty percent of a
staff post and most likely will be paid pro rated on UCL's new pay structure
on grade 7, spine point 33 (GBP28,010) plus London allowance. In sum, salary
per course is expected to be approximately GBP2,800-3,200 inclusive. These
appointments are fixed term contracts; no renewal is planned. Applicants
must be able to work legally in the UK.
Candidates should send a CV, names of two referees who can be contacted
regarding the candidate's teaching experience, and a brief proposal on how
the recent course syllabus can be implemented or refined. These must be
received by 1 August 2006. Send materials to Undergraduate Tutor, Department
of Science and Technology Studies, University College London, Gower Street,
London, WC1E 6BT, UK. Direct enquiries to Dr Joe Cain <[log in to unmask]>.
