British Society for the History of Science Annual Conference
University of Manchester, UK
Thursday 28 June – Sunday 1 July 2007

The innovative and successful BSHS Annual Conference is to set a new
standard with an extra day and a host of activities in 2007. Following
excellent meetings in Liverpool, Leeds and Canterbury, Manchester will
host the 2007 conference.

Once the “shock city” which defined images of industrial change for the
world, Manchester has constantly re-invented itself. Now a thriving,
internationally recognised centre of European culture, the city reflects
a complex legacy of science, innovation, decline, resurgence and
adaptation.

The University of Manchester’s Centre for the History of Science,
Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) is the largest unit in the UK dedicated
to the study of the integrated historical field. The University also
houses the Manchester Museum, with its renowned natural history and
Egyptology collections, and the John Rylands University Library. The
Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester reflects the industrial
past and present of North-West England, and the city is home to the
People’s History Museum, the Museum of Transport and the stunningly
designed Imperial War Museum North.

The conference will take place at Hulme Hall, a leafy University of
Manchester site near Rusholme, ten minutes by bus from the city centre.
Manchester is easily accessible by train from most British cities,
while a fast and regular rail service connects the city to Manchester
Airport, one of Northern Europe’s major international hubs, with direct
flights available to and from a range of transatlantic and other
international destinations.

Further information and the latest updates will be available from the
Society’s website at <www.bshs.org.uk/bshs2007>.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Papers are invited in all areas of the history of science, technology
and medicine. Proposals for themed panels are particularly encouraged.
Themed panel organisers will receive further guidelines, and are welcome
to discuss provisional proposals with the programme organisers via the
address below.

Paper abstracts should contain a maximum of 250 words, use no footnotes,
and be comprehensible to a non-specialist audience. In order that we
can publicise the conference as effectively as possible, we will assume
that in submitting an abstract you are granting us the right to publish
its content on the Society’s website and elsewhere: if you do not wish
your abstract to be publicised, please advise us explicitly. Where
appropriate, we may contact you seeking further information for use in
BSHS press releases.

Panel submissions, where possible, should include individual abstracts
(as above) for the papers, and should include contact details for all
presenters.

All submissions should be sent, preferably in MS Word or plain text
format, to <[log in to unmask]>; or by post to BSHS 2007, CHSTM, 2nd
Floor Simon Building, Brunswick Street, University of Manchester, M13
9PL, United Kingdom. The deadline for receipt of submissions is Sunday
4 February 2007.

Registration information will be published in February 2007 in the
Society’s newsletter, Viewpoint, and on the Society’s website at
<www.bshs.org.uk/bshs2007>. It will also be available from the BSHS
Executive Secretary, 5 Woodcote Green, Fleet, Hampshire, GU51 4EY, UK,
telephone +44 (0)1252 641135.
