GAMES WITHIN GAMES

This paper explores potential convergences between advertising, youth culture and computer games, and the co-option of ideologies within and outside the game to create new marketing opportunities. It takes the example of advertising that merges multiplayer games, girl power and soft drink marketing to raises questions about how young people read and respond to texts of this kind, and how teachers might work with them in ways that acknowledge their power and pleasures, while also developing awareness, understanding and critique.
