Thanks for a lively and interesting set of posts...
Couple more thoughts:
- there are apparently SL API's, which ultimately means that content
published "out here" can be republished within the 3d environment. Any
worries about wasting effort should therefore be reduced
- let's not forget that the interactions in virtual worlds can be very
different from interactions in the real. We *could* be in danger of
assuming that the "gallery" metaphor is the only one we wanted to
re-create in such a world. There are also lectures, videocasts, live
radio, "weird physics", stage shows and probably a bunch of stuff no one
has thought of yet.
- persuading museums to build in the same area - a kind of "museum park"
would seem sensible. InfoIsland is an example of this in SL. This means
users get maximum benefit, as well as potentially reducing building
costs. Not least of all it means that to a certain extent you're less
likely to end up with someone, er, dodgy next door to you..
- don't forget the other 3d worlds - I've recently become worryingly
addicted to www.there.com and personally find it much less daunting (as
well as much quicker) than 2L. (If you happen to stop by here, please
feel free to join the newly created "There Museums Association"!)
I'll continue having conversations with people about how some kind of
joined-up approach to this might work and will be in contact if anything
comes of it.
Cheers
Mike
