Hi Mike,
Yes, I do actually have a second life presence (mainly after I saw it on
the Beeb news a while back). It was interesting to see and 'hear' what
people do on there, and how money changes hands for unreal objects and
land so freely and cleverly!
I was also inetersted in the way that it is being used commercially, and
potentially by museums/cultural institutions, to sell images of real
objects and 'things'. There is a lot of (no doubt much in breach of
copyright) artwork on second life and also fine art objects. I believe
several places have been set up as independent 'art galleries'!
However, I have also seen the overly commercial side of second life
which is financed by gambling and pornography industries (suggesting
it's role as the worlds oldest trade as being true!) and how much of the
'employment' is around these industries - think Las Vegas only larger!
However, despite that, I do find the concept extremely interesting. I
have heard, admitedly unverified, stories of people making thousands of
pounds a week in land sales and commercial ventures; of schools and R&D
facilities, and also a hopeful view of how reporting and dealing with
anti-social behaviour can be dealt with.
From a technical viewpoint, it is very bandwidth intensive, and on
anything less than a solid broadband connection it is impossible to
'roam' about (or drive or fly!) and can get quite glitchy and have long
periods of mainframe downtime. Although saying all that, the detail is
impressive, and the control of the world is super fine.
A great thing about a system like Second Life is that it's the next step
forward in bringing everyone closer. I can sit on a sofa in a flat
having a chat with my friends who live all over the country, we can all
chat at the same time, and share photo's news and have a real time chat
in an almost real time surrounding.
Not sure what you wanted in way of a response Mike, but hope that helps
answer any questions, or adds several more for you!
Peter

Hi All
Do any of you have virtual presences in Second Life (or any of the other
virtual worlds)? Have you thought about it, decided against it, thought
about it and done it, or not thought about it....?
Would be interesting to hear from you, either on- or off-list
Thanks
Mike
