Liebe Eva,
Hab herzlichen dank fuer deinen Mail. Thank you for your email.
In my reply I would like to draw attention specifically to new media and access for disabled people. The MLA website has a wealth of information, research reports and guidance about how best to provide access to museums, libraries and archives for disabled people: http://www.mla.gov.uk/webdav/harmonise?Page/@id=73&Document/@id=22997&Section[@stateId_eq_left_hand_root]/@id=4302
This includes:
- the MLA report on webaccessibility (2005) with recommendations for sector organisations
- information on the Jodi Awards for excellence in museum, library and archive webaccessibility, including weblinks to Award winning sites
- introductory guidance on "Inclusive technology" in the Disability Portfolio Guide 5
Additional information and good practice examples:
- the recently launched audio description tour of the Compass website http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/compass/ixbin/hixclient.exe?_IXDB_=compass&search-form=graphical/main.html&submit-button=search
click "Audio description
- on audio-guides for visually impaired people, a 'Talking Images' research report and good practice guidance:
http://www.rnib.org.uk , search 'Talking Images'
- websites about the hidden histories of disabled people:
http://www.speakingforourselves.org.uk/
http://www.reclaimingthepast.org.uk/
This area is of growing relevance to museums in the UK. Disabled people are underrepresented in collections and there is lack of knowledge about to represent disabled people within collections. Research about this can be found on the Department for Museums Studies of the University of Leicester:
http://www.le.ac.uk/museumstudies/research/Reports/BITF2.pdf
- a couple of companies in the UK (Anntennaaudio) and in Austria (contact via: [log in to unmask], a disability organisation) have piloted pdas with sing language.
- a small but growing number of museums in the UK are providing British Sign Language for specific exhibits
- disability legislation in the UK (DDA) has led to the growth of virtual access to exhibits in accessible and significant spaces, for example in listed buildings (unter Denkmalschutz stehende Gebaeude). An excellent contact is: Sophie Weaver, Access Officer, Colchester Museums: [log in to unmask]
Colchester Museums is also a leading museum in terms of organisational commitment to disability access and offers a number of services, some using the medium of ICT
- excellent contacts in Germany are:
Thilo Martini, [log in to unmask] ,the organiser of the annual German Museums and the Web conference
Brigitte Bornemann-Jeske, from BIT which provides web accessibility advice Germany [log in to unmask] and guidance on German anti discrimination legislation.
The accessibility of new media for disabled people raises a number of challenges, which to be met require organisational commitment to the principles of accessible and inclusive design. Every new use of ICT brings with it both the potential for new inbuilt barriers and also for accessibility.
Ich kann dir auch noch weitere Dokumente zukommen lassen, sollte dich das Thema Barrierefreiheit interessieren.

Subject: Question: Innovative use of new technologies in UK museums?
Dear list members
I am working in a research project dealing with learning in museums by
way of new technologies. The project is undertaken at the Knowledge
Media Research Center in Tuebingen, Germany, together with the Deutsches
Museum in Munich and a pedagogic research institute in Kiel. Our focus
is particularly on the recontextualisation of objects using new
technologies. We are currently trying to get an overview on the status
quo of the use of new media in museums, but especially for the UK our
information is rather scarce.
This is why I hope you might be willing to give me some hints as to
which museums in the UK and/or worldwide, in your opinion, make use of
new technologies in their exhibitions in a particularly good and/or
innovative way.
Thank you very much for your assistance. Please do not hesitate to let
me know if you want further information about our research. I am looking
forward to hearing from you.
With kind regards
Eva Reussner
