APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
One of the regular tasks that I, as an Information Manager for West
Yorkshire Probation Service, have to complete is the compilation of a
weekly news bulletin. While these can be printed out and distributed or
emailed - I want my customers to have access to news as it happens rather
than waiting for the weekly printout/email. An excellent solution to this
is to use RSS Newsfeeds. RSS feeds are available on most news websites -
but these are, for my purposes, too broad. I need to supply information
just about Criminal Justice and related issues.
I have privately developed a website to allow me to maintain a database of
news articles that I have hand picked from a wide variety of news
websites. I can then, at the push of a button, create a XML compliant RSS
Newsfeed that will be hosted on the site. The news readers of my customers
will then pick up on this change and present the news to them without any
further work on my part.
The website address is: http://www.my-rss.co.uk
See my Criminal Justice feed in action on the NPRIE Website (http://www.nprie.info ) or paste this link into your news reader : http://my-rss.accessions.co.uk/feed3.xml .
If you don't have a newsreader the Google online one is very good: http://www.google.com/reader/
Benefits of the full system:
* Centrally maintained database of news items that can be updated
on the move from any internet enabled PC
* No need to install any software on your PC
* Manage multiple feeds from one user friendly interface
* Create XML compliant RSS feeds at the click of a button
* "Scrape" news from news sites by just specifying the URL of the
story (new templates added weekly) - saves inputting time
* Organise and sort your feed as you require.
* Email support
Further features will be added in response to needs identified by users.
Sign up in February 2006 for 30 days free access - after 30 days
membership will revert to free access with limited functionality. More
details are available on the site.
The service is in its "beta" phase so any constructive feedback would be
gratefully received (and may be rewarded!).
