Calling all Government Librarians....
The government library rep for ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information Professionals in the Social Sciences) has recently left the Committee due to a change of job, therefore, we currently have a vacancy. If you are interested in helping out with the running of the group and organising events we'd love to hear from you. The Committee meet no more than 6 times a year to plan events, usually based in London. More details about the group and it's services are below however if you'd like to chat informally about what the work entails do get in touch - contact details below.

What is ALISS?
ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information Professionals in the Social Sciences) is a not-for-profit unincorporated professional society.
It is an independent group which was formed in April 2005 by the former committee of ASSIGN (Aslib Social Science Information Group and Network).
The purpose of the group is to:
* Provide opportunities for networking and self-development
* Offer a forum for communication
* Create a network of cooperation and a forum for discussion about emerging issues in social science librarianship.
Membership of the group is open to:
* libraries/ information units in all sectors (government, commercial, voluntary sector, academic sector) associated with the social sciences
* information workers/ librarians at all stages of their careers.
ALISS Services
* Publications. All members will receive a copy of our journal ALISS Quarterly (formerly called ASSIGNation) Its emphasis is upon the publication of concise informative articles and reviews of social science developments. An annual prize will be awarded for the most innovative and inspiring article. Key topics of interest will continue to include electronic library developments and innovations in information literacy from a UK perspective. Special themed issues planned for 2007 include intellectual property rights, open scholarship and information literacy.
* Alerting Services We maintain an email service LIS-SocialScience offering weekly updates from major providers such as Intute: Social Sciences and timely reviews of new developments. We also use our web site to provide links to the latest news, projects and full text papers online.
* Events. These include:
* Tours of relevant library and information services. In 2006 these included: Guardian News Archive; Westminster Reference Library and the Foreign and Commonwealth office
* Half-day events and workshops. A useful opportunity to keep up to date with new developments and enjoy our buffet lunches! The annual AGM includes two speakers and we have recently introduced an Xmas event. Topics covered include: Open access repositories, website archiving.
* Conferences - In recent years we have expanded our remit and now offer an annual one-day summer conference. Past topics have included: E-learning; open access repositories and Librarians and the Google generation. * During 2007 we aim to launch a revamped website which will highlight these and offer links to the latest Social Science news.
Membership fees
* There are two categories of membership: corporate and individual.
* Membership runs from August-August.
* Fees include a subscription to the journal ALISS Quarterly (formerly known as ASSIGNation). Individual members receive one copy sent to their home or work address. Corporate members receive one copy per institution.
* ALISS members also receive free admittance to ALISS events, AGM buffet lunch and reduced rate fees on all ALISS conferences.
* Rates for 2006-7 Corporate £35 Individual £20.
