Cataloguing and Book Processing Department

BACKGROUND

The John Rylands University Library provides library and information
services to the students and staff of The University of Manchester, 
which
came into being on 1 October 2004, following the dissolution of the
Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST. It is one of the largest
academic library services in the country catering for the needs of 
well
over 32,000 students and researchers, as well as academic staff. 
The JRUL
provides 4 million printed items, 1 million microfilms, over 25,000
electronic journals, 400,000 ebooks and a large number of 
databases to its
members. Its Special Collections are among the greatest in the 
world.

The Cataloguing Department, based in the Main Library, has 
around 20 FTE
staff who are responsible for the cataloguing of all the Library's 
printed
and audio-visual material onto the Talis Library Management 
System.

The University is currently developing its courses in Chinese and 
East
Asian studies and to support this development the Library is 
looking to
appoint a Bibliographical Assistant to catalogue Chinese and East 
Asian
materials.

The post is based primarily in the Main Library, however all Library
employees are required to work at any Library site, as necessary.

All Library staff are required to wear an identity badge.

Hours
Hours of work are 35 per week (full time), worked during normal 
office
hours, Monday to Friday (full details of the hours of work will be 
given
on appointment). A flexible working hours scheme is available.

Job Description

Job Title: Bibliographical Assistant (East Asian Languages)

Responsible to: Head of Cataloguing & Book Processing

Organisation Unit: Cataloguing & Book Processing Department

Date: December 2005

Overall Purpose of the Role
To catalogue the Library's Chinese language materials onto the 
Library's
computer system.

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties
To carry out original and copy cataloguing to AACR and MARC 
standards

To search a range of external databases for bibliographic records.

To carry out name authority work.

To carry out subject analysis of items, assigning Dewey 
classification
numbers or Library of Congress Subject Headings, as required.

To carry out such other duties as may be required by the Head of 
the
Department or the University Librarian.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A relevant degree.

Demonstrable proficiency in written and spoken Mandarin.

The ability to work on one's own and as part of a team.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

A high level of personal organisation.

The ability to concentrate on tasks and to pay attention to detail, 
while
making good progress with the work in hand.

Good keyboarding skills

Desirable
A postgraduate qualification in librarianship, or experience of 
working in
a library, preferably in an academic institution.

Knowledge of other East Asian languages, particularly Japanese.

Ability to transliterate East Asian scripts into Roman script

Knowledge of AACR2 and MARC or other cataloguing experience

Comprehensive knowledge and experience of relevant processes 
and
procedures and specialised software.

Proven initiative and judgment to resolve daily problems
