InfusionS - Information Skills Training in Scotland www.infusions.org.uk - will be running the following workshops in Edinburgh at Queen Margaret University College. Prices for the workshops, which we aim to keep at an affordable level, include all refreshments, with lunch provided on full-day courses.

These sessions are proving to be very popular and early booking is advised as places are limited to 12 for each workshop.

The Informed Web Searcher: Advanced Search Strategies for the Internet - a full day workshop in Edinburgh.
THIS SESSION IS NOW FULLY BOOKED, HOWEVER IT IS REPEATED LATER IN JUNE - PLEASE SEE BELOW
This is a full day training workshop for the more experienced information searcher. The workshop will focus on developing advanced search strategies for the Internet, but which are equally applicable across the range of information services and resources available. The day will include sessions on:
*	developing effective search strategies;
*	using Internet search engines effectively;
*	in-depth exploration of search options and functions, e.g. exploIting Google fully;
*	searching for specific types of information, and using specialised search engines;
*	the Deep Web, what it is and strategies for  accessing information;
*	evaluating the quality of information on the internet, detecting misinformation, spoofs etc;
*	tracking down pages that have disappeared;
*	staying up-to-date with latest developments in Internet search.

£165.00 per attendee (including lunch and refreshments)

24 May 2006 - Finding Your Way Around the Web - a half day workshop in Edinburgh

This is a practical half day workshop giving the opportunity to build on skills and develop effective search techniques for finding information on the Internet. The session will help participants to identify firstly, what information is needed, and then follow on to introduce a variety of search tools, including search engines, metasearch engines and subject gateways to search the Internet more effectively. The activities are continually updated to include the latest developments in Internet searching.  

This workshop is aimed at the less experienced, non-specialist, user of the Internet for information. Attendees should feel comfortable using a pc, and have some basic knowledge of the Internet, such as how to access a website and navigate your way around it.

31 May 2006 - Net Navigator for Public Library Staff - a full day workshop in Edinburgh

This is a practical full day workshop for staff working in public libraries, and has been developed in response to continued requests from public libraries for training. The trainers were previously involved in delivery of the NOF ICT training for libraries to public library authorities throughout Scotland, are highly experienced and knowledgeable in this area. 

With all the recent developments in public libraries, effective Internet searching for information has become a key skill for public library staff. The Net Navigator training develops advanced search strategies for the Internet, and is designed to enable public library staff to use the Internet effectively and efficiently when dealing with information enquiries in the public library. 

The day will include sessions on
*	developing effective search strategies, and applying these to the public library context;
*	using Internet search engines effectively, exploiting search options and functions fully;
*	awareness of suitable Internet resources for public library users;
*	searching for specific types of information, and using specialised search engines;
*	the Deep Web, what it is and strategies for  accessing information;
*	evaluating the quality of information on the internet, detecting misinformation, spoofs etc;
*	how to raise awareness of the importance of evaluating information for quality, and pass this on to library users;
*	staying up-to-date with latest developments in Internet search.
    
This workshop is aimed at those public library staff who have been using the Internet to answer enquiries for some time, and have ideally undertaken some basic training in this area, such as the NOF Core ICT Training. 14 June 2006 - Assessing Information Quality: evaluation of Internet resources and information - a half day workshop in Edinburgh

Being able to critically evaluate websites and the information accessed via the Internet has become a core skill, and in this workshop we will provide a variety of tools and resources to enable those attending to take a methodical approach to the quality evaluation process. 

This workshop complements the 'Finding Your Way Around the Web' workshop for the less experienced searcher.
