I missed the original enquiry to lis-link but not too long ago whilst
studying at the University of Brighton, I did a part time job similar to
this working in the computer centre in the library. It even involved
helping some of the library staff to answer some of the more techie
enquiries. It was very well paid for student work - better than shelving
books and got me into the training/info literacy side of librarianship -
well worth it.

Subject: Re: Library student mentors
I remember that they were using students to help other students at
the University of Technology Sydney library, when I visited in 2004.
There was an article about it (with photo) in their newsletter as well,
but I can't immediately find it on the site
(http://www.lib.uts.edu.au/). As I remember it, the students mostly
acted as people who were actively "around" in the library, in
particular to help students who were using library computers etc.
The students were paid, and given brightly coloured jackets (to
stand out), and it seemed to work well.
I think there was a particular focus on recruiting international
students, which had various benefits in terms of getting to know the
needs of international students better, as well as giving good
support to other international students. (You'll see on the website
that the library also has some Chinese webpages and an
"international librarian")
