USING THE INTERNET TO FIND LEGAL INFORMATION

The internet carries vast quantities of information about English and European Union law. Much of it is in the hidden web and there are disadvantages in using the material which is free to access. This practical workshop including more than two hours hands-on use of the internet by participants, aims to clarify the issues and assist participants become effective searchers and users of electronic legal information.

· identify appropriate sites to find legal information
· use search tools effectively
· identify relevant discussion lists
· use email and discussion lists to generally accepted standards of good practice
· know how to keep up-to-date with developments on the Internet affecting lawyers and information staff
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Librarians and information specialists who work in public, commercial and private organizations where law is beginning to form a part of their enquiry work or who are newly appointed to a position within an established law library.
Participants should have a basic knowledge of the sources of English legal information (or have attended the basic course on legal information offered by CILIP) and know how to use of a web browser.
WORKSHOP LEADER: PETER CLINCH
Peter holds a law degree and has been Information Specialist for Law at Cardiff University since 1992. He is a registered teacher in higher education and advisor to the General Council of the Bar in library provision and legal research skills training for its Bar Vocational Course. He has written several books and numerous articles on legal research skills.
