APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
Next week on 9th May, Talis are holding a research event for LMS vendors,
request management providers, libraries and other interested parties to
discuss how we may collaborate more closely to build better resource
discovery and resource sharing solutions.
As many of you already know, Talis has developed an open platform to which
libraries are contributing their holdings data and which will enable
others to build applications that interoperate with this data.
One of the difficulties that many libraries encounter is the ease with
which they can make a catalogue export, whether it is a full catalogue
contribution or simply an additions or deletions notification. We would
like to discuss this in more detail with our LMS colleagues and hopefully
come up with some suggestions for ways that – as a domain – we can make
this process simpler and less costly.
I have gathered a few tales from libraries that have agreed that I may
share their experience on an anonymous basis, which I’m happy to do, as
this is an exercise in collaboration. However, it would be very useful to
have some more examples, if any of you have some anecdotes about
convoluted processes that you have to undertake to make a data
contribution to any union catalogue.
The kinds of questions I have:
What are the issues that stop you making regular data contributions?
How many people in your authority have to get involved in order to make a
contribution?
Are you restricted in terms of how much of your catalogue you can export?
Are you restricted in terms of the formats you can send?
Do you have to pay to make a catalogue export?
What are the consequences, if any, of not being able to contribute as
regularly as you would like?
As in everything, the devil really is in the detail. It is very difficult
to solve these problems unless we have some concrete examples of what the
issues really are, so the more information you can provide, the better.
If there is information of value coming back, I’m happy to summarise the
responses for the benefit of the list.
Many thanks,
Fiona Leslie
